Opting Out of Your 401(k)

Learn how to opt out of your 401(k) plan.

Almost all 401(k) plans have an automatic enrollment feature, meaning that you will be automatically enrolled in the plan and funds will be removed from your paycheck. If you do not wish to participate in the plan, you'll need to go through the process of opting out.

You should receive a welcome email when you become eligible to participate in your company's 401(k) plan. It will ask you to choose to either "start saving" or "opt out." Follow the opt out link to ensure you do not contribute to the plan. You can start contributing later if you change your mind.

If you are already contributing, and would like to stop, access your account and change your deferral amount to zero.
